Melville Monument_Comrie_2446-90D-autumn

A prominent memorial to Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville (1742 - 1811), known as 'the uncrowned King of Scotland' owning to his political power, Lord Melville's Monument (or simply the Melville Monument) is located on the summit of Dun More, overlooking Comrie to the south. Built in 1812 and designed by James Gillespie Graham (1776 - 1855), the monument comprises a granite obelisk, some 22m (72 feet) in height, within a railed enclosure. It was damaged by lightning in 1894 and subsequently repaired. Lord Melville's Monument was B-listed in 1977.

Melville had his country seat at nearby Dunira.
